ReasoningBank Backend Implementation Summary

Date: 2025-10-13 Package: agentic-flow@1.5.13 Status: Complete

📋 Overview

This document summarizes the implementation of ReasoningBank backend selection features for the agentic-flow package, addressing the findings from REASONINGBANK_FIXES.md and REASONINGBANK_INVESTIGATION.md.

🎯 Objectives Completed

1. Documentation Updates

README.md - Added backend information:

  • Updated "ReasoningBank: Agents That Learn" section to mention dual backends
  • Updated "Core Components" table to clarify "dual backends" support
  • Made backend selection visible in the quick reference

2. Comprehensive Backend Documentation

Created REASONINGBANK_BACKENDS.md with:

  • Complete backend comparison table (Node.js vs WASM vs WASM in Node.js)
  • Usage examples for each backend
  • Automatic backend selection guide
  • Performance metrics
  • Environment validation
  • Testing commands
  • Integration recommendations

Key Sections:

  • 📊 Backend Comparison (3 variants with detailed specs)
  • 🔧 Usage (Node.js and WASM examples)
  • 🎯 Backend Selection Guide (automatic + manual)
  • 🔍 Key Differences (storage location, embedding generation)
  • 📦 Package.json Integration (conditional exports)
  • 🧪 Validation (test scripts for all backends)
  • ⚠️ Important Notes (WASM limitations in Node.js)
  • 🚀 Recommendations (for package and integrators)
  • 📊 Performance Metrics (operation timing)

3. Backend Selector Implementation

Created src/reasoningbank/backend-selector.ts with:

// Core functions exported:
- getRecommendedBackend(): 'nodejs' | 'wasm'
- hasIndexedDB(): boolean
- hasSQLite(): boolean
- createOptimalReasoningBank(dbName, options)
- getBackendInfo()
- validateEnvironment()

Features:

  • Automatic environment detection (Node.js vs Browser)
  • Optional forceBackend override
  • Verbose logging support
  • Environment validation with warnings
  • Feature detection (IndexedDB, SQLite)

Usage:

import { createOptimalReasoningBank } from 'agentic-flow/reasoningbank/backend-selector';

// Automatic selection (Node.js → SQLite, Browser → WASM)
const rb = await createOptimalReasoningBank('my-app');

// Now use rb with either backend seamlessly
const patterns = await rb.searchByCategory('category', 10);

4. Package.json Conditional Exports

Updated package.json with:

{
  "exports": {
    ".": "./dist/index.js",
    "./reasoningbank": {
      "node": "./dist/reasoningbank/index.js",
      "browser": "./dist/reasoningbank/wasm-adapter.js",
      "default": "./dist/reasoningbank/index.js"
    },
    "./reasoningbank/backend-selector": "./dist/reasoningbank/backend-selector.js",
    "./reasoningbank/wasm-adapter": "./dist/reasoningbank/wasm-adapter.js",
    "./router": "./dist/router/index.js",
    "./agent-booster": "./dist/agent-booster/index.js"
  }
}

Benefits:

  • Automatic Node.js/Browser detection
  • Clean import paths
  • Tree-shaking support
  • Explicit backend selection available

5. Source Code Comments

Updated src/reasoningbank/index.ts with:

/**
 * This is the Node.js backend using SQLite for persistent storage.
 * For browser environments, use './wasm-adapter.js' instead.
 * For automatic backend selection, use './backend-selector.js'.
 */

Environment Detection Logic

function getRecommendedBackend() {
  // Check for browser

🧪 Validation

Test Commands Provided

Node.js Backend:

node <<EOF
import { ReasoningBank } from 'agentic-flow/dist/reasoningbank/index.js';
const rb = new ReasoningBank({ dbPath: '.swarm/memory.db' });
// ... test operations ...
EOF

WASM Backend (Browser):

import { createReasoningBank } from 'agentic-flow/dist/reasoningbank/wasm-adapter.js';
const rb = await createReasoningBank('test-db');
// ... test operations ...

Automatic Selection:

import { createOptimalReasoningBank } from 'agentic-flow/reasoningbank/backend-selector';
const rb = await createOptimalReasoningBank('my-app', { verbose: true });
// ... works in both Node.js and Browser ...

🎯 User Benefits

For Package Users

Before:

// Confusing - which one to use?
import { ReasoningBank } from 'agentic-flow/dist/reasoningbank/index.js';
import { createReasoningBank } from 'agentic-flow/dist/reasoningbank/wasm-adapter.js';

After:

// Automatic - just works!
import { createOptimalReasoningBank } from 'agentic-flow/reasoningbank/backend-selector';
const rb = await createOptimalReasoningBank('my-app');

For Integration Projects

claude-flow Integration:

// Explicit Node.js backend for CLI persistence
import { ReasoningBank } from 'agentic-flow/reasoningbank'; // Auto-selects Node.js

Browser Applications:

// Explicit WASM backend for client-side
import { createReasoningBank } from 'agentic-flow/reasoningbank'; // Auto-selects WASM

Universal Libraries:

// Works everywhere
import { createOptimalReasoningBank } from 'agentic-flow/reasoningbank/backend-selector';

🚀 Next Steps

For agentic-flow v1.5.13

  • Document backends in README
  • Create REASONINGBANK_BACKENDS.md
  • Implement backend-selector.ts
  • Update package.json exports
  • Build successfully
  • ⏭️ Version bump to 1.5.13
  • ⏭️ Publish to npm

For claude-flow Integration (Future)

Based on REASONINGBANK_FIXES.md, consider:

  1. Hybrid Query System (optional enhancement):

    // Search across both Basic (JSON) and ReasoningBank (SQLite)
    import { hybridQuery } from 'claude-flow/memory/hybrid-query';
    const results = await hybridQuery('authentication', { hybrid: true });

  2. Status Command Update:

    $ claude-flow memory status

    📊 Memory Status:

    Basic Mode:
      - Location: ./memory/memory-store.json
      - Entries: 42
      - Status: ✅ Initialized

      - Location: .swarm/memory.db
      - Patterns: 289
      - Embeddings: 289
      - Status: ✅ Active
